The Beer Bitch Speaks

Louise Leonard a.k.a. "Weezy" will drink you under the table.

“I’m like one of those people who lights one cigarette from the other, except with beer,” Louise Leonard says, her raspy voice making the point for her.

Louise, a.k.a “Weezy” is our in-house beer expert, though she is also a chef and she is also Lee Anne’s partner in crime and she also worked on Top Chef and went to culinary school (with Lee Anne) and blah-blah-blah. These two have been partners in crime for quite some time now, and that much is obvious in the way they can magically communicate through grunts and gestures, without a need for words.

Weezy has big plans when it comes to beer. We’re not sure what comes first or what’s top secret and what’s not, but we know she’s gonna be big in the beer world: maybe a bar owner, maybe a television show host, maybe a blogger. Let’s just say the glass is always half-full in Weezy’s world.

In addition to the throaty voice a la Demi Moore, the Weeze is one of those cute hipster blondes, someone who can pull off short hair and has the dimples you always wanted and talks without really thinking about what she’s saying, which makes being around her entertaining enough, forget about the cameras.

Tonight is all about beer, Stone Brewing Company to be exact. Weezy gave us the rundown on our ever-so-special collection for this first Zeno Supper Club, fuck yeah!

Stone Levitation Ale: Stone is the lightest of the selection, but it’s got a little more hoppiness than you might expect from an ale, which is Stone’s signature. It’s 4.4% Alcohol By Volume (ABV) so it’s not uber-strong. With a light-to-medium body, it’s equally hoppy and malty and will go great with some of the evening’s light, Mexican appetizers like Jicama salad and chips and guac.

Pale Ale: This is a classic West-coast pale ale with signature carmel overtones. Slightly stronger and hoppier than Levitation (5.4% ABV), but still light enough to start off the evening right, the perfect compliment to a nice California sunset (even though we know our sunsets are pretty because of the pollution, it’s still pretty). It’s the first beer they ever produced 15 years ago.

IPA: No doubt Stone sets the standard for what an IPA is supposed to taste like. It’s full of hops, super bitter, dry, and crisp. It’s 6.9% ABV so it’s strong in every sense of the word, but Weezy says, “That’s why it’s my favorite!”

Smoked Porter: This dark, smoked malt is super carmely and it’s what Lee Anne used as a key ingredient for her signature Mole Short Ribs. It’s good for drinking, too and pairs really well with any red meat, mushrooms, or other earthy flavors. “This beer has overtones of chocolate, coffee and some smokiness,” said Greg Koch, Stone’s Head Honcho (CEO) during this evening’s cooking demo for the first webisode (premiere TBA). “You’re just using the natural characteristics of the Porter so a mole is a great pairing choice.”

Arrogant Bastard: This son’bitch is 7.2% ABV and it’s from Escondido so WTF, yo. Let’s just say it lives up to it’s name. On the label it says, “This is an aggressive beer. You probably won’t like it.” So. ‘Nuff said.
